Sanja festival - Asakusa -
We had a chance to see Sanja festival in Asakusa.

Matsuri refers to festival. There are numerous Matsuri in Japan throughout the year.
Although there are differences according to the region, most are held in order to show thanks for the harvest and to pray for prosperity.
The typical Matsuri is characterized by participants parading through town while carrying potable shrines called Mikoshi or festival floats called Dashi.


The most famous festival in Tokyo is Sanja festival. Attracts a great number of spectators.
More than 100 Mikoshi are prepared through the streets.
And on the Sunday, main festival day, the tree main Honja-Mikoshi makes their ceremonial exit from
Asakusa-jinja shrine.


A hanten that they are wearing, are decorated on the back with the symbol of the local Mikoshi group is customary wear at festival.
This symbol, called daimon, is designed to incorporate the crest of other logo of the local town association.
