On February 3rd (or 4th), a traditional event called Setsubun is practiced in Japan.<br />
On this day people practice a ceremony called Mamemaki  (bean-throwing) at temples, shrines and at home to expel demons (symbol of misfortune) and invite fortune.  <br />

 <title>Snowman in Japan</title>

specially in northern parts and the sides of Japan Sea.<br />

modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism.<br />

The doll has also been commercialized by many Buddhist temples to use alongside goal setting.<br />
