2021 Reopening Borders of Japan for Tourists

2021 Reopening Borders of Japan for Tourists

Finally, there has been some good news about the state of the Japanese border closure for almost all tourists. The ban on tourists due to the outbreak of COVID-19 has been in effect since April 2020. Ever since, there has been no timeline at all on when the borders of Japan would be reopening again for tourism, leaving many tourists who wanted to come to Japan and people working in tourism hanging. We all hope for a reopening in 2021, but when exactly will that happen?

Of course, safety always comes first, and it is understandable that the government of Japan is very careful about the return of inbound tourism, but it looks like there is finally a plan on reopening the borders in April 2021.

Border Reopening Rules

While nothing is set in stone and reopening will partly depend on the future situation of the pandemic like available medicines, vaccinations, and infection trends, the fact that reopening the Japanese borders to inbound tourism is again on the table as a point of discussion is very hopeful.

First, it was the long-term visa holders who were left in limbo for a prolonged period of time not being able to reenter Japan after leaving the country for a vacation or family visit who were able to return when complying with certain measures. Then the news came that the 2020 Olympics would be held regardless of the pandemic situation at that moment.

Current Situation

And now, on October 5, 2020, the news broke that the government is thinking of ways to safely reopen the borders for international tourists from April 2021. The safety measures that will likely be in place are as follows;

  • Tourists wanting to enter Japan have to test negative for COVID-19 72 hours before entering the airplane and show proof of this negative test and then again test negative during a fast-test (saliva test) that is taken after arrival at the airport in Japan.
  • Be able to show insurance that contains coverage for COVID-19 upon arrival.
  • Download an app that tracks visitors’ health status and location daily. This way you wouldn’t need to quarantine for 14 days.
  • The setup of special centers for tourists who are worried about their health while traveling in Japan in order to unburden Japan’s regular health system.

It is also not unlikely that besides the preventive measures above, there will also be restrictions on the total number of tourists that can enter Japan in one day for a while after the border reopens for tourists, and that tourists who book a tour package through a travel agency like us will get priority.
