While Niigata prefecture in the western part of Japan’s main island might not be a typical destination for international tourists, it has plenty to offer in terms of nature and history. Japanese tourists mainly come to Niigata for winter sports, but also in summer the prefecture is a tourist destination because of Sado Island that is especially good to visit in the warmer months. Because Niigata is a large producer of rice, there are many famous sake breweries, some of which tourists are allowed to visit. Good historical sights include the Old Saito Residence and the Hakusan shrine which are both located in Niigata city.
