Viewing autumn leaves is one of the popular activities on a Japan autumn tour. We visit the Autumn leaves Festival which is carried out in Lake Kawaguchi, where tourists can enjoy the contrast of snow-capped Mount Fuji and bright colored leaves. Not to mention the sightseeing spots such as Shinto shrines or Buddhist temples, you can enjoy local food like Shojin-ryori, which is vegetarian Buddhist cuisine.
Another local dish you will try is Okonomiyaki; sometimes described as Japanese pizza or pancake, the resemblance is in form only. Actually, okonomiyaki are various forms of batter and cabbage cakes cooked on a griddle. You will also visit 9 World Heritage Sites of UNESCO and the Autumn Leaves Festival at Mt.Fuji area

Day 1 : Airport (Narita or Haneda)-Tokyo
Welcome to Tokyo! You will be greeted by an English-speaking assistant at the airport. The assistant will get you in the bus to your hotel.You can also extend your vacation before / after the tour in Tokyo, Osaka. Please contact us!

Day 2 : Tokyo City Tour
Today, we head out to the Imperial palace. The
Imperial palace is the primary residence of
the Emperor of Japan.
We will visit
Tokyo Skytree, a broadcasting and observation tower with the height of 634 meters (2,080ft). The view of the metropolitan Tokyo area from there will be spectacular. If the sky is clear, the Mt. Fuji can be seen in the distance.
Then we proceed to
Asakusa Sensoji Temple, the Five Storied Pagoda and the traditional Nakamise shopping arcade.
Then drive to
Akihabara area and enjoy Japanese pop culture zone, the electronic district and the mecca for the anime (Japanese cartoon characters).

Day 4 : Tokyo – Mt Fuji – Suwa
This is the day when we visit the highest peak in Japan,
Mt.Fuji. It is has been appreciated by many Japanese for ages because of its perfect conical shape. Please enjoy magnificent shape from Lake Kawaguchi if weather permitting. We visit Autumn Leaves Festival there.
We then head out to Suwa Lake area. Before arriving at the hotel, we visit two historically important places in the area. Takashima Castle was nicknamed floating castle because of the location facing to the lake. Suwa Taisha is a head shrine of 25,000 Suwa Shrines all over Japan.
We stay at the hotel with hot springs for two nights. Let’s enjoy kaiseki dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 : Suwa – Mt Yatsugatake area – Suwa
Today, we visit mountain area to enjoy autumn leaves. Yatsugatake is a huge mountain range consists of many peaks. The highest peak is Mt. Akadake which is 2,899m high. There are various trees which change the color of leaves to red, orange and yellow.
Today’s dinner is at a private house. They welcome us with local food and hospitality. This is a good opportunity to see how Japanese people live in the traditional house.

Day 6 : Suwa – Nakasendo Trail: Tsumago and Magome – Takayama
In the morning, we drive to Nakasendo. Nakasendo is an old trail constructed 400 years ago by the Tokugawa Shogunate as one of the major routes between Edo (Tokyo now) and Kyoto.
Tsumago is the most well preserved post town in Nakasendo. There used to be 31 accommodations for the travelers going from/to Edo or Kyoto.
Then we go on a 8km’s hike through the forest and rice field. You can see the life style of the local people.
The goal is
Magome post town. Another beautiful post town spreading on the hill, so it has a different atmosphere from Tsumago.
We stay in old charming town, Takayama for two nights.

Day 7 : Takayama – Shirakawago – Takayama
Takayama is surrounded by mountains and also known as ‘Little Kyoto’. We start the day with Morning Market which local farmers come to sell their products. Then to old town Sanmachi, which was developed as a merchant town built in the Edo period, is still prosperous today. We visit Takayama Jinya that is the only remaining local government office of the Edo period.
Then we drive to
Shirakawago. Located around the Sho River in the deep mountains, Shirakawago is a historic village where unique traditional farmhouses have survived. This village is an outstanding example of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to a cold environment. We can also observe the inside of one of the farmhouses.

Day 8 : Takayama – Nara – Kyoto
In the morning we drive to Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. In
Nara, first we visit
Todaiji Temple and Nara deer park. Todaiji Temple is one of Japan’s most famous Buddhist temples and a World Heritage site. Its Great Buddha Hall, which is one of the world’s largest wooden buildings, houses one of the world’s largest bronze statues of Buddha. Nara park is very famous for its many free-roaming deer. You can feed them specially made crackers. The deer will bow to you to beg for them!
We also visit
Kasuga Taisha Shrine which has thousands of stone lantern along the main approach, before going to Kyoto.

Day 9 : Kyoto
Today we visit
Kyoto which became the capital after Nara in the late 8th century. First we visit
Fushimi Inari Taisha with seemingly endless arcades of vermillion torii gate spread across a thickly wooden mountain.
If you like drinking
sake, you would love to visit our next stop…the sake brewery! The guide gives you a little tour inside followed by tasting.
We can’t miss Kyoto’s most famous highlights,
Kiyomizu Temple and
Kinkakuji Temple known as Golden Pavilion.
In the evening, we will take a stroll around the
Gion geisha district. If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of a maiko or geisha on her way to the tea house.

Day 10 : Kyoto – Himeji – Matsue
Leaving Kyoto, we go to
Himeji Castle that was built in early 17th century. It is called as “Egret castle” due to its beautiful white walls and roof. It is designated as World Heritage of UNESCO.
Then, we will drive to the prestigious
Adachi Museum that is famous for beautiful art works and Japanese garden. The collection includes over 100 paintings by Yokoyama Taikan and a good selection of works by other major 20th century Japanese painters.

Day 11 : Matsue – Izumo Taisha – Hagi
Today’s excursion starts from
Matsue Castle, completed in 1611 and one of only 12 remaining original castles nationwide.
Next place is
Izumo Taisha Shrine. Its origin is unknown, however, it has such a long time history since ancient time.
Then we go to Hagi driving along the coastline of Sea of Japan enjoying the nice view from the window.
We stay in the old castle town Hagi for two nights.

Day 12 : Hagi – Motonosumi Shrine – Akiyoshido Cave- Hagi
First in the morning, we visit historical highlights of
Hagi. Tokoji is a family temple of the feudal lord Mori. There are 500 stone lanterns donated by their vassals. We also walk around the castle town with well preserved samurai and merchant houses.
Next destination is Motonosumi Shrine. The view of 123 torii gates lining up toward the ocean is really photogenic. It was selected as one of the “Japan’s 31 most beautiful places” by CNN.
Before going back to the hotel, we visit
Akiyoshido Cave under the Akiyoshidai Plateau. It is one of the biggest caves in Japan. The total length is 10,700 meters. There is an underground river along the trail with many scenic spots.

Day 13 : Hagi – Tsuwano – Hiroshima
Leaving Hagi, we go to a small castle town
Tsuwano that prides itself on traditional arts, crafts, and literature. It developed along the Tsuwano-gawa River and surrounded by nature, and is also called “Little Kyoto” in the San-in region. We enjoy walking in the beautiful town.
Then we head for
Hiroshima. Japan is the only country which has suffered A-bomb disaster. The first A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. It would be precious experience to visit
Peace Memorial Park and
Museum as well as
A-bomb Dome that is designated as World Heritage of UNESCO. Although you don’t see the aftermath of the disaster in Hiroshima today, the museum tells you all about what happened.

Day 14 : Hiroshima – Miyajima – Onomichi – Shimanami-Kaido – Dogo
Near Hiroshima city there is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site,
Itsukushima Shinto shrine. We take a boat to a small sacred island, on whose beach stands the vermilion color Torii gate. The gate and the shrine look floating on the water when the tide is high.
Before going to Shikoku, we stop at
Onomichi, a town developed on the slope. We enjoy the great view from the mountain top and walking down the nostalgic small streets.
Then we cross a series of huge suspension bridges spanning Shikoku and Honshu islands. The view from the bridges made with latest Japanese technology will be unforgettable. The climate similar to that of Mediterranean Sea is suitable for growing fruits like grapes and oranges.
We stay in the hot-spring town Dogo in
Matsuyama.

Day 15 : Dogo – Takamatsu – Iya
We drive to
Takamatsu in the morning. Ritsurin Garden, one of the top Japanese gardens, is the symbol of the city. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery walking around the garden.
Then we go into the rarely visited area called
Iya Valley. We stop at Kazurabashi which is a vine suspension bridge. If you are brave enough, you can cross this thrilling bridge on foot.
We stay at another hot-spring hotel surrounded by the mountains.

Day 16 : Iya – Tokushima – Naruto – Osaka
We drive to
Tokushima where you can enjoy Awaodori demonstration show in Awaodori Museum. You can also dance with the performers. Near the museum, there is one of the 88 pilgrimage temples, Ryozenji. You may come across the pilgrims there.
On the way to go to Osaka, we stop at
Naruto Strait which generates whirlpool at high-tide and low-tide. We look down the strait from the observation deck.
Crossing two bridges, we go back to Honshu and stay in Osaka.

Day 17 : Osaka – Koyasan
In the morning, we visit highlight spots in
Osaka.
Osaka Castle is a symbol of the city standing in the huge ground. We also visit
Umeda Sky Building to enjoy the great view of the big city.
The tour continues to the sacred training spot of
Buddhist monks at
Koyasan mountains. 117 temples are located 1,000m above sea level and Koyasan is designated as World Heirtage site of UNESCO. We visit Kompon Daito (Great Pagoda) of Danjogaran planned by the legendary monk Kobo Daishi, as a center of his monastic complex. The design is a three-dimensional expression of the mandalas.
We proceed to Kongobuji, the administrative head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism.
Tonight, you spend your night in the Shukubo (temple accommodation) and you can taste vegetarian dinner.

Day 18 : Koyasan – Kumano
In the morning, Shukubo hold morning prayer and fire ritual before breakfast. You can attend these sacred ceremony. After taking vegetarian breakfast, we continue the sightseeing of
Koyasan. The mausoleum of Kobodaishi, Okunoin. Tall cedar trees lined up along the approach to the mausoleum makes the area sacred atmosphere.
Then we drive to another sacred place Kumano famous pilgrimage destination surrounded by the mountains. Kumano Hongu Taisha is the central Shinto shrine of Kumano religious belief. We also see the huge torii gate which is standing at the former shrine site.
We stay in Kawayu which means hot-spring water. Natural hot water is gashing from the river bottom.

Day 19 : Kumano – River Cruise – Nachi Waterfalls – Nachi Katsuura
First in the morning, we ride on the wooden boat on the Kumano River enjoying the magnificent view. The goal is another sacred shrine or Kumano religious belief, Hayatama Taisha.
Then we drive to Nachi. We walk part of the
Kumano Kodo (old trail) to Nachi Taisha Shrine and Nachi Waterfalls. Nachi Waterfalls is one of the biggest waterfalls in Japan. It is regarded as a sacred place.
We stay in the port town
Nachi Katsuura tonight.

Day 20 : Nachi Katsuura – Shirahama – Osaka
Before breakfast, we visit
Nachi Katsuura Fish Market to see the famous tuna auction. You can see hundreds of tuna laid on the floor.
Then we drive along the coast line of Kii Peninsula. On the way to Osaka, we make several photo stops to see the beautiful scenery which was created naturaly. Hashikuiiwa is a series of rocks on the ocean which look like bridge supports. There are many unique shape rocks in Shirahama area. We will stop at Senjojiki and Sandanbeki.
We finish the drive when we arrive at the hotel in Osaka.

Day 21 : Osaka – Kansai Airport
